Lancaster Market

What do you think should be done?

Yesterday the local Liberal Democrats set up a stall in town for the purposes of conducting a survey on what you feel should be done about the market. (Download a PDF version of the Lancaster Market Survey)

For those not familiar with the background: In 1984  the old market burned down. Lancaster City Council (then Labour-led) decided to rent a new building rather than own it. Since then the rents have increased and the number of traders has fallen. The market now costs nearly £500,000 a year. The Council (except the Conservatives) agreed to set up a Working Party, as proposed by Council Leader Stuart Langhorn, to explore all the options and report back by 31 March.

What we have set out to do is collate your views and present to to the Council.   If you were not able to make it to the stall yesterday we have set up on online poll that you can take part in.

I believe the best course of action for Lancaster Market is:

I can understand that "apparently" the market is costing tax payer money, but by closing it down we would be putting people, who have families, like my uncle who has two shops in the market, out of work, and he has two young children, plus a mortage to pay for. I also believe that the market has been a part of lanacster for years and that we would be loosing out if it wasnt there. I understand that the market isnt doing as well as in teh past but i think instead of disgarding it as soon as it starts to go slightly wrong we should be supporting the traders and helping to turn it around. We need to stick together as people of lancaster, not turn on each other and try to put people out of jobs at teh drop of a hat, thanks.

The whole point of a market is to get goods to the public cheaply. It's also difficult to see how it could be called a market if the traders are in shops. These sellers are usually called shopkeepers not market traders. For me that only leaves option 2.
